SYNOPSIS: Laura, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires, returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open.

No spoilers about the plot itself. I looked forward to this title since it was announced for Cannes. I even read some positive reviews during the festival, but only got to see it a few days ago. Previously I absolutely loved A Separation and I would consider it one of the best films of the whole millenium. The Past was great, but they could have cut it already half an hour before the end. The last 30 minutes felt like someone keeps touching you after great lovemaking: you are happy about it, but you don´t really need it anymore. There would have been a perfect moment to scroll the credits too. The Salesman was a solid good movie from the beginning to the end. No masterpiece, but definitely a work of a good screenwriter and director understanding his craft, knowing how to use his actors and to build drama with very small gestures. And then comes Everybody Knows. And from the beginning to the end, it is a cheap soap opera that never really goes under the surface. Everything is too much tied to the action, there is no finesse in what is left unsaid, or what is said but deceitfully. Everything is just there, and really compares to anything else in popular drama film. What a waste it is for a lot of great actors and for such a good director to have made this one. I literally kept waiting for two hours for the slightest hint of reasoning why I sat in the cinema for this particular piece. Before the kidnapping was introduced, I was certain that the soap opera was just a stylistic decision, and eventually the reality kicks in and everything turns into that dark realistic realm Farhadi is so good with. How little did I know... Complete nonsensical observations: During the wedding scene I was thinking how little children there are at the reception for a Spanish wedding, and then later in the dialogue they addressed "how there always is so many children in Spanish weddings". I had to laugh. And why did that 6 year old actress kid sleep in a fenced crib and be confined in a crib each scene you see her? Isn´t she a bit too old for that? Damnit. And the introduction of the boy in the beginning and the meeting gazes. Geez. And even done twice, followed by the totally idiotic moped scene. C-grade at best.
